Proof the Rich can go to Heaven

A closer look at the bible refutes the popular myth and proof that the rich can go to heaven

A few of the people in my bible study class recently got into an argument about whether the rich can get into heaven. It’s a tough argument to get into, I know what I believe, interpreting my belief into words is a little more difficult.

The most popular bible verse, Matthew 19-24 states it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven´s kingdom.

From just that single verse, it would seem the odds are stacked against the materially wealthy. But reading more of the passage, along with several other verses in the bible may just offer some hope of heavenly treasure for those with earthly riches.

Proof that the rich can go to heaven

Reading further into Matthew we find another popular quote, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For with God all things are possible.”

Just as [with God] a camel might pass through the eye of a needle, it seems possible the rich can go to heaven.

For those that need a more literal interpretation, many of the chose people in the bible were very wealthy. God promised great wealth to many of his followers. Genesis 13 talks about how Abraham was already very rich in livestock, silver and gold and God blessed him with much more as the story unfolds.

David, King of Israel, and his son Solomon were very rich and powerful. After King Solomon asks for an, “understanding of heart,” in Kings 3:5, God replies with, “I will give you more wisdom and understanding than anyone has ever had before or will ever have again. I will also give you what you have not asked for: all your life you will have wealth and honor, more than that of any other King.”

King Solomon can the rich go to heaven

King Solomon was so rich that all his cups were made of gold

Even after losing everything, Job is rewarded with more material wealth than he had previously because of his faith.

So if so many blessed men in the bible were also very rich, why do so many interpret it as impossible for a rich man to go to heaven?

The rich can go to heaven: rich but not greedy

We find the answer in one of the other most popular money-related bible verses. Matthew 6-24 reads, “No man can serve two masters for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. One cannot serve God and mammon [Arabic for money].”

The curse is in the love of money itself, the pursuit of material wealth on its own. I’ve always thought this was an odd desire anyway, what good is money itself anyway? Money only has value if you spend it so the pursuit of money without regard to what you can do with it seems a little pointless.

God does not condemn anyone for having money. He warns against boundless greed above all else but that doesn’t mean you can’t strive to be successful and have nice things.

Of course, it’s always good to share your success with others. Whether you believe in heaven or not, making your community a better place through charitable giving will offer priceless rewards. Use money as a tool for a prosperous and abundant life rather than the end goal.

I’m not a biblical scholar, just someone that reads the bible and believes in the word of God. I would love to hear from others that have wondered whether the rich can go to heaven. Share in the comments below. Frugal Grandma

  1. Yes! Wealthy people can go to heaven if they do what Jesus says. Sell what they have ,give to the poor and come follow Him. Riches are uncertain,, one can become greedy, selfish, vain and not caring about other people, being lifted up in pride and not even remembering their Creator. God gave man the power to get wealth, they believe their strength, gave them their wealth, some even flaunt it in front of people, bragging how rich they. These people are poor in God. Do they even know Him?Do they even give Him thanks? I bet not! The rich man went away sorrowful according to The Bible, He chose his money over God. IT’S GOD’S plan for all men to be saved but there are certain things we have to do the Bible way,not our way. What Jesus says is truth, no skipping around it! So it’s not impossible , it’s not His will that any should perish, the rich and poor are in God’s plan for Salvation, the rich should do what Jesus says in this case and search for the UNSEARCHABLE riches of Christ. We will not take anything with us when we go. Only what we do for Christ will last to eternity. What will it profit a man to gain this whole world and loose his one soul, what will he give in exchange for his soul. So the rich should not trust in their riches but, help the less fortunate and go take up his cross and follow Jesus. Abraham,Job and other men of the old testament were men who honour and worshipped the Almighty God, they trusted and obeyed Him and put their faith and confidence in Him, David also, God blessed them and their household and for this they were blessed, and also people around them. They didn’t flaunt their riches ,they acknowledge in scripture God gave them , they didn’t boast about it, they humbled themselves before God. Riches was nothing to them, God was everything to them. The center of their lives. Not so with these rich folkes nowadays. Their money is their god, if they die in their worldy rich life and did not repent and seek the Lord then they can’t go to heaven, but now in this life while they are alive if they use their money to help the poor and follow Jesus and obey His words, yes! They can go heaven.
